daddy's little girl

for so long, she was
his closest ally,
the child who followed
his every step, step for step,
like a little Nazi

she stood at attention,
awaited his orders,
obeyed with alacrity
only to be reprimanded
for her shortcomings

always the shortcomings

until finally, she broke ranks,
her steps no longer in sync
with his, a bohemian,
a blasphemer, forfeiting
her place in his life

in a bid for sovereignty

his chains were too heavy
her true self too long
denied to be further borne
she fled though it cost her all
and freedom she found

but in the quiet
of the night, she
still hears the
echoes of his voice
and weeps
