old to
dream of
forever

all I want
now
is you

one day
at a
time
inflamedour bodies
writhed in
a month-long
wet dream

from which
we awoke

suddenly

and with
regret
KindredI had a friend once
who understood me
when I spoke;
I didn’t have to
hide, explain.

But he’s gone now,
and I fall into silence
because there’s
no one left
to hear.
effigyrummaging through an
antique hope chest, I found
a magic wand,
old and beaten up,
hidden in the folds
of my mother’s
yellowed wedding dress

I held my breath
and waved it over
my head, showers
of light erupting
like sun snow,
sparks melting into
my skin and making
me glow like
an April afternoon

and in two shakes,
I became
the woman you
always wanted

you suddenly
found me more
desirable than
any other woman
in the world

a goddess

and now you’re mine

but even as you
drift into sated sleep
among my pillows,
the warm vigor of
our love making
still fresh in
my weighted
limbs,

I find myself
weepi
CommonIn the arrogance
of youth, I considered
myself gifted, talented,
grand.

I’ve long since
learned that I’m just
an ordinary
person.

Yet, for a time,
I saw myself
special in your
eyes.

Now,
I’m denied
even
this.
a cold nighta cold night

I can’t get warm

a worn brown
blanket, an old
lover, hugs me

as I turn up
the heater and
wander the
house

stopping at the
window to watch
the rain

the streetlights
bounce off a
pool of night
water

and I see
us there in
the reflection

a rolling
flame wrapped
in two scented
skins

and I
wonder
where you are

it’s a cold night

I can’t get warm
HalfheartedI gave you my whole heart,
and you returned it
   in pieces.

So, I laid it out on the kitchen
table to glue back
   together,

but the calico jumped up
and stole some before I
   could catch her.

While I chased the cat, the dog
ate as many pieces as
   he could reach,

apparently preferring the taste
of bleeding heart to
   Alpo Chopped Beef.

By the time I gave up on the kitty
and sat back down to the job,
   big chunks had disappeared,

making it that much harder, like
putting together a puzzle with missing
   pieces and
Cease FireI’ve figured out how
to end our bickering.

I’ll buy my own bed.

Then I’ll find my own
house to put it in.
indelibleyou lie
imprinted on
my memory

as fixed and
bright as the
dog star
to sailors
lost on
dark seas
WailJerked awake by dreams,
I lie in the dark and listen
to the long, deep wail
of a passing train, its
mourning disappearing
into tomorrow.

I turn back into my blankets
and wonder where it’s going,
rushing through the cold,
black night, its voice so
frantic and needful.

Its call echoes through
the silence and beckons
me to chase it as I
realize the frantic need
        is mine.

the first week of
a college semester

I’ve used it many
times to help amateur
essayists get
words on paper

yet as I watch my
new students
diligently list the reasons
they’ve come back
to school

I ponder the
question with new eyes
and realize that

I don’t know

the answer
rawtake back
your pretty love
words

tuck them
under your
tongue

kiss me
until my lips bloom
with bruises

scrape me raw
with your
blistering skin

and scratch
this itch until
it bleeds
talk to mehad I known the last
time you called that
we would never
speak again, I would
have talked longer,
kept you on the line
babbling about the weather,
asking inane questions
just to hear your voice
produce the answers
seasonalI.

cold days remind
  me of you

II.

you would
rub my freezing
fingers between
your big hands
and smile

your eyes shining
like a window
of blue sky
among dark clouds -
a promise of spring

as new blossoms
shiver in the wind,
I remember frigid
mornings and
your yelp as I
poked my cold nose
into your back

how you turned to me
and we disappeared
beneath blankets, our
bodies creating their
own moist heat, wrapped
in the language
of summer

I loved you,
drawn to your burning
warmth, to the calm rhythm
of your breathing,
as irresistibly as gravity
calls to earth
the falling leaves
of autumn

III.

si
DisheartenedI was so completely
in love with him

that my heart burst
from my chest

and threw itself
at his feet despite

my admonishment to
show some restraint.

It refused to listen
and so startled

my lover with its
frantic flopping

like a stranded fish
that he turned and fled.

My foolish heart
chased after him and

is following him still
while I sit here

with a hole
in my chest and

wait for both of them
to come back.

hide the bleeding.

Yet from you, I find
no escape, your silence
a weapon I cannot
deflect.

No matter how deeply
I burrow into myself,
your muteness follows me,
wraps around me
like a shroud

until I find myself
without defense,
naked and helpless
before lips long
dead of words.
whisperyour voice shivers through
me like breezes shaking
time-worn boughs

(and I cannot
resist that
ancient call)

slide your whispers
along skin, let them
sink deep as bone

breathe my name,
a fervent, sighing
psalm

and I will lift my
face to your sun and
unfurl my limbs

singing like new leaves
dancing in the
warm winds
of spring
SightlessI looked for you
for a long time.

In crowds, on
buses, at bustling
football games,
I sought.

I combed
the personals,
scoured the
internet,
turned over
some rocks.

I crawled through
dingy bars, sat alone
on mall benches,
and even pretended
to find religion.

My heart leapt
when I thought
I’d found you
(but I was wrong)
and then again
and again.

But I didn’t
find you,

and, finally, my
aging heart
began to contract
into stone,
the cooling lava
of wild, futile
hopes unmet.

I sit now
in a quiet place
and weep amid
my dead dreams
from eyes gone
blind with
searching.
twilightI, too, once
blossomed
in the green
freshness
of spring

my flesh as
firm and sweet
as a ripe fig
between
sure teeth

but long days
of sameness
have curled
unnoticed
into years

and the dried
parchment of

Inspired by a conversation with my friend =arkansawyer about Anam Cara - soul friends. I suggested he write about it, but he asked me to, so between his ideas and my poem, it's a collaboration. :heart:

I like this concept of Soul Friends/Anam Cara. It really does seem like that, on the rarest occasions-- I think your piece captures and explores the idea elegantly.

Thanks, Jamie. I find it to be a fascinating concept that certain people are "meant" to enter our lives at certain times, and I have met people with whom I hit it off so quickly and easily, it was as if we'd always known each other. I think I'm going to have to explore this further. :nod:

I like how your title works on one level at the beginning of the poem, and on a whole other level at the end. Beautifully expressed. :aww:
