So, I laid it out on the kitchen
table to glue back
   together,

but the calico jumped up
and stole some before I
   could catch her.

While I chased the cat, the dog
ate as many pieces as
   he could reach,

apparently preferring the taste
of bleeding heart to
   Alpo Chopped Beef.

By the time I gave up on the kitty
and sat back down to the job,
   big chunks had disappeared,

making it that much harder, like
putting together a puzzle with missing
   pieces and

dissemblerwhen you say
you don’t need
anyone

you’re a liar

burgeonI opened myself
before you like a
blossom to
the sun

and you fell
upon me like a
blind torrent
soon spent

leaving me
broken and bruised
as a tulip in a
sudden storm

destroyed in
its newness
by the pouring
rain

unhinderedwhen I met you,
I raised my barriers,
shored up my defenses,
tended the fences
that protect
me

but you passed
through all of my walls
as easily as wind
through open
windows

and kissed me

now
I’m yours

forever

forgive and forgethe begged
her forgiveness

and she promised
to give it

as soon as
she forgot

you would
rub my freezing
fingers between
your big hands
and smile

your eyes shining
like a window
of blue sky
among dark clouds -
a promise of spring

as new blossoms
shiver in the wind,
I remember frigid
mornings and
your yelp as I
poked my cold nose
into your back

how you turned to me
and we disappeared
beneath blankets, our
bodies creating their
own moist heat, wrapped
in the language
of summer

I loved you,
drawn to your burning
warmth, to the calm rhythm
of your breathing,
as irresistibly as gravity
calls to earth
the falling leaves
of autumn

a cold nighta cold night

I can’t get warm

a worn brown
blanket, an old
lover, hugs me

as I turn up
the heater and
wander the
house

stopping at the
window to watch
the rain

the streetlights
bounce off a
pool of night
water

and I see
us there in
the reflection

a rolling
flame wrapped
in two scented
skins

and I
wonder
where you are

it’s a cold night

I can’t get warm

meant to bewhen I went out
to find my fate

I never expected
its face

to be yours

CommonIn the arrogance
of youth, I considered
myself gifted, talented,
grand.

I’ve long since
learned that I’m just
an ordinary
person.

Yet, for a time,
I saw myself
special in your
eyes.

Now,
I’m denied
even
this.

DisheartenedI was so completely
in love with him

that my heart burst
from my chest

and threw itself
at his feet despite

my admonishment to
show some restraint.

It refused to listen
and so startled

my lover with its
frantic flopping

like a stranded fish
that he turned and fled.

My foolish heart
chased after him and

is following him still
while I sit here

with a hole
in my chest and

wait for both of them
to come back.

sugar is for suckersthey always tell her
she’s a sweet woman

let her melt slowly like
sugar cubes on their tongues
until she disappears

a sweet confection
soon consumed

before they move
on to other
refreshment

but she’s finally learned

the next man will find
her so sour that his lips will pucker
when they touch her skin

like a child with a green
apple lollipop

his mouth will curl into
readiness for kisses so bitter
with salt and gall

that he will find
himself unable

to resist

crashonce, happiness
was as simple
as silver dangles
on french wires
and frosted pink
lipstick

then he came

with dark hair
and darker smiles,
his bright blue eyes
lit up when
I walked in
a room

and happiness
became complicated

the nights...

oh, the things
we did in the
dark

(the light of
day would have blushed
had it seen)

we swallowed each
other whole like
bottles of bad
medicine, the kind
that makes fools
jump off buildings
trying to fly

but we were greedy,
gorging on each
other until we
could hold
no more

happiness
left with him

now I dream
again

of happiness as simple
as silver dangles
on french wires

clean, bright dream
of new paint and
smooth angles

on a run into tomorrow
when the world
seemed as new
as we were

we laughed and
loved and put
the top down
in the rain

but we ran
too far, too fast,
losing each other at
a blind curve

now alone, we succumb,
our dream
a rusting hulk
in a forgotten field

as the road runs on
without us

soulfulif eyes mirror
the soul, yours

is a bright
blue shining

clean, cloudless
skies

fields of
cornflowers

deep breaths on
frosty mornings

fathomless depths
of soft seas

that I will swim
into tomorrow

A month-long wet dream is a daunting prospect.

Thee could be whole worlds of regret between these protagonists.

They need not be regretting the same things.

I wonder if it's not true that the fewer words you use, the more ambiguous those words become.

That would a very good reason for economy?

I think the tone, subject and structure of this piece are very adeptly aligned. Especially the alternating length of the last three strophes.
