a standard prompt
for a writing sample
the first week of
a college semester

I’ve used it many
times to help amateur
essayists get
words on paper

yet as I watch my
new students
diligently list the reasons
they’ve come back
to school

I ponder the
question with new eyes
and realize that

I don’t know

the answer
:iconblueskye27:
Just thinking...

I wish my English teacher was as good at English as you were...sometimes I feel like I'm co-teaching her class. :faint:

I miss last year's teacher... :(

we should, each moment, have this answer at the ready. i like the way you've asked yourself.

Interesting when the assignment becomes homework for the teacher as well. It's a good question for all of us to think about from time to time.

This was a wonderfully thought-provoking piece for me.
It's funny how sometimes we're so sure of our purpose, and then how equally it can at times bring you totally crashing down, near-crippled.
It makes me wonder what pattern of thinking, what sort of social interaction keep us feeling the former. How to try and capture that.

I love it when I can provoke this kind of response. And you're so right. It seems when we're most sure - that's when we get kicked.

And I really enjoy reading pieces like yours that provoke such responses.
Yes. The old maxim about pride coming before a fall seems unfortunately quite accurate, at times.
I guess that's why people regard it as axiomatic.

I guess we're not meant to ever get that sure of ourselves, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Complacency accomplishes nothing.
