Folding sheets for the king-sized
bed of which I’m the sole occupant
hardly seems worth the effort.
Downsizing would be more
sensible – the blankets and comforters
less bothersome to launder – more
room freed for bookshelves or
clean open spaces.

Yet I always choose to keep it,

hoping in the future
that I won't be here
alone.
Laundry day....

Cut much of the second stanza on Alec's advice. Thanks, Alec.

"second occupant" seemed business like to me. and your other poems have this wonderful turn to the amorous and steamy.

i thought of guest or unexpected guest or amorous visitor and a few others that were too on the head... i don't know. but that's why you're the master poet and i'm not.

still, this poem is so sweetly hopeful.

I think you're right. I changed that last line. Tell me what you think.

And thanks for the help!

I started this long note of thoughts that ended up circling me around to my first reaction:

what a wonderfully bitter sweet ending.

bitter sweet.

So I missed the ending? Aww...
Anyways, larger bed = more space, and bigger comforter. Bigger comforter = wrap around you. Wrap around you = warm. Larger bed = warm. Transitive property of equality.
I like the poem.

I love having big beds to myself. I'm such a bed-hog! Plus it gives more room for tossing and turning when under stress... and not falling off. :)

The first eight lines do what you do so well, teasing out the implications of a mundane domestic ritual.

To maintain the earlier tone in the closing stanza, something like (to paraphrase in prose)

"I keep it because there's always the possibility that the other side won't always be free"

Perhaps you see what I mean?

I want to buy a kingsize bed... just in case... but the again, even my small bed feels so lonely every now and then.

Great poem...

The most comfortable bed I've ever own was actually a full (a little smaller than a double). My son has it now. But small can be cozy with company. Don't be discouraged.

I'm by myself on a queen-size bed (because I'm the queen of my room! :D). I'm just glad my mom does the laundry.

first off, this is an amazing piece. second . . . i LOVE laundry day. for me, its 2 hours of simple, necessary work where i can listen to the music i need to hear on my headphones (music has always been a vehicle to communion and prayer for me) and just be. and besides. . . i funny to watch the mamcitas at the laundrymat get a little weirded out at the 6'1" gringo crying and grinning while he's folding his laundry:)

Thanks, Chris. You crying and grinning at the laundry mat makes me a little sad though...

I can completely understand needing that music time though. My headphones get a workout.

I used to have a twin so I got used to such a small space that when i upgraded to a full I still just sleep by the wall and the rest of the space is taken up by books and notebooks..if I had a king it would be a book case..lol

Oh, wow, this so sounds like me. Half of my bed was so full of books and clothes, you couldn't see it! I finally broke down and put it all away. I'm pretty bad to pile stuff around like that. Notebooks everywhere!
