Literature Text

She checks her email again
like an addict trying to
find a fix, but he’s not there.

She knew he wouldn’t be,
understood from the beginning
that once she scratched that itch

he would run like the
dog that he is, mating season
over, time to move on.

But knowing and wanting
are not the same, so she
continues to kid herself

because she wants him to
love her even as she knows
he never will.
I've gone back and forth between first and third person on this one. I finally settled on third to make the piece seem more objective. Between that and the title, the reader should see how it really is, but maybe I'm being too obscure...

I like the way you set the scene with the compulsive email checking. So many people can relate to that. Also, I think it was a good call settling on third person. It amplifies the "been there-done that" factor for the reader.
