It doesn’t take much
to make people feel welcome.

Put out a few flowers,
hang the hummingbird feeders,
sweep the porch.

Then when someone knocks,
open the door, smile,
and say hello.
For my good friend Edie because this one reminds me of her...

So simple and economical, so apparently artless.

(Do you have hummingbirds in your state?)

I had always imagined that they lived in South American jungles.

Humming birds and magnolias....

Yep, we've got them both. When there are still so many flowers around, they don't come to the feeders that often yet, but when it starts to get so dry in July, they'll be hanging around all day everyday. They're lovely to watch.

The magnollia's not blooming yet, but I'm watching! :)

An older sister Debbie and a younger brother John. I'm right in the middle. Deb's coming over this weekend so I can dye her hair for her. :)

I like this a lot...it's particular and direct and a fine piece for how to use line breaks! And the imagery, don't get me started, the poem really shows how effective it is to cradle images in simple language.

Thanks so much, Dave. You make me feel like such a fine poet when, in fact, I just shared part of my day yesterday. Thanks again.
